Fan test for the sony playstation 3 models

For all those conducting the fan tests on the ps3 to get rid of all the dust you have on your console, or just to test the speed of your fan. I am here to say that it is really not recommended especially if you are doing the non legit way on any model besides the 40gb. Below I will tell you how and how not to do this test.

First let me say, as mentioned by Sony the ‘fan test’ should only be performed at the discretion of a sony representative or from customer support. It goes without saying do this at your own risk.

40gb model

The only real legit way of doing this. First take out any disc you may have inside your playstation and put it away. Turn off your playstation properly (hold ps button > turn of system) after the console has powered down and the light is red, flick the switch off at the back.
Now while flicking the switch back on hold the eject button on your ps3. You should hear it beep and then the fan will turn on. It will be very loud for approximately 20 seconds and then your playstation should beep again and a red light will start blinking. Flick the switch off from the back wait a few seconds then turn it back on.

20, 60, 80gb models

I don’t recommend you try this as there is a chance your playstation may over heat. This way is not official and can possibly harm your playstation. Basically what you have to do is turn on your playstation and flip your entire playstation the other way around. With the power button side facing the ground. If you hold it there for a few seconds you should hear the cycles change on your fan until it gets to the loudest point. Wait for another few seconds and flip your playstation back.

In conclusion:

I really don’t recommend you try either way, but the 40gb method is much more safer and authentic then the unofficial way of the other models. It’s up to you, however a lot of dust is removed from your playstation by doing a fan test which I guess is a  good thing.
