How to benefit from website downtime
Don’t fret, it’s all good
For a webmaster one of the most annoying and traumatic experiences is downtime, specifically website downtime. It’s especially tragic if you are running a social network site (forum, blog, etc) where there are users constantly active, you don’t want your website to be down when you have a bunch of people visiting it, after all it gives you a bad rep. After a year of constant worry and hosting regret everytime my website went down I devised a plan which brought my sites back up in no time.
Redirect the domain
On occasion your entire server is down by this I mean, you have no access to your control panel, websites etc. If users try to visit your site during this time they will get “page cannot load” or “cannot resolve” errors and you can’t do anything about this because you have no control over your server.
What you can do however, is redirect the domain from your domain registrar to an custom error page that you created or a backup of your website. It’s easier to do this if you have two servers, otherwise you can run a temporary server from your computer. Some domain registrars even give you a basic webpage when you buy any domain.
Make a plan
Make a list of all the things you are going to do WHEN not if, your server comes back up, this helps pass the time and lets you keep productive. The main thing you should keep in mind is that you shouldn’t fret/stress or be anxious as that usually makes time go that much slower and will probably delay things.
Do something you enjoy
Relieve yourself of the anguish and indulge yourself in your favorite passtime. Whether it be cooking, roller skating, playing video games or even dancing these things will take your mind off the problem at hand and reassure you that everything will be okay, because nine times out of ten it isn’t a major problem and your hosting provider is just doing maintenance or services.
In conclusion, I know downtime can be annoying but you shouldn’t lose your cool because after all it’s just the internet.
