With stunning visuals and a 3″ touchscreen display boasting an impressive 240×400 pixels, LG really makes its mark with the ‘viewty’. The KU990 encompasses all the best features (including 5 megapixel camera, autofocus and xenon flash) of the best quality camera phones into a very stylish and tweaked looking cellphone. The viewty houses the ability to shoot a showstopping 120 frames per second and allows the user to upload the videos directly to youtube. Although not the first 5 megapixel cellphone produced by LG, the viewty really does supersede its failed companion the LG KG920 and remarkably at that. The viewty does not harvest the same flaws that the 920 had, including the price, design and the slow camera interface.

Design:
Probably the best looking high quality camera phone on the market, the viewty has a unique side to its exterior. Averaging at about 112g and relatively similar to the iPhone in size and shape the LG viewty is made up of a glossy design which makes the phone look more ‘like a high-end handset’ rather than the previous ‘cheap’ looking LG phones. Again similar to the iPhone the KU990 is equipped with a large touchscreen and three mechanical navigational keys at the bottom. The camera and flash are positioned on the rear side of the phone much like Sony Ericcson’s K810i and the 5 megapixel camera lens with Schneider-Kreuznach optics has a hardware jog wheel, that controls the digital zoom.
Setbacks:
- No hot-swap memory card capability
- Having stylus as a dongle is an inconvenient solution
- File management slows once the memory card starts filling up
- Operating the zooming jog wheel gets in the way of the lens
- No Wi-Fi compatibility
Features:
- Unlike the majority of other touchscreen camera phones the viewty comes jampacked with features that are all highly responsive and initate with little to no ‘lag time’. The KU990 has the ability to be set to vibrate when you touch it, providing a more tactile approach.
- The viewty posses’ one of the best pre installed web browsers I have seen in a long time, it enables the user to view full sized web pages at a reduced size and then zoom in on sections you want to see properly. Web pages also tend to load relatively quickly depending on the network. The KU990 comes with HSDPA which should allow pages to download at approximately 1.8mbps.
- As mentioned earlier the LG KU990 Viewty harvests a 5 megapixel camera under its sheath, allowing one to record at a whopping 120 frames per second, great for filming fast action shots, as the video can then be played back in slow motion.
Conclusion:
The LG KU990 Viewty is a camera phone that you must try out, with similar resemblances to the iPhone and Prada the KU990 has positioned itself nicely at the top as the new touchscreen competitor of 2008. Apart from some minor setbacks and disappointments the viewty is a cost efficient, feature packed and well polished camera phone which incorporates most if not all of the aspects of its competitors into a single device.
