Mirrors Edge Game Review
An action packed first person adventure
So I recently looked into purchasing the PS3 title “MIrrors Edge”. The game received some mixed reviews so I decided I should check it out for myself. After the purchase I was enthralled and it has definitely been placed in the top ten of my all time favorites list. With an incredible game engine coated in a sleek exterior Mirrors Edge is the sophisticated “first person shooter” that you’ve been waiting for.
Note how I placed FPS in quotations, this is because although weapons are a part of the game they are are not the primary focus. Instead the game revoles around agility, acrobatics, athletics and stealth. However, when weapons do come in place they fit in perfectly well.
Mirrors Edge is set in a futuristic totalitarian society where the only way to get information across is through couriers or “runners” as they are referred to. You play as faith who is one of these runners, unbeknownst to her she has become tangled up in the “dark side” of the city after the framing of her cop sister.
The controls are relatively simple to master and you should find yourself feeling quite comfortable after about an hour of play. The game incorporates the six axis motion sensor of the playstation controller which allows the player to further conduct stunts and rolls. All in all it is quite easy to come to terms with.
The only major downside I found was in the hand to hand combat in the action sequences. Although the guns fire brilliantly it is a little bit hard to accurately land strikes on your oponent because of the way the camera moves. On the other hand it is quite an exhilirating feeling when you successfully pull off a run and gun combo. The player can use things like slowing down time, wall running and sliding to their advantage when in a fight sequence.
An upside of the lack of focus on weaponry is the fact that the player can really take in the sights which are actually quite exquisite. Standing on the roof tops one can hear the distant sounds of cars passing and birds overhead yet the atmosphere is somewhat soothing and the silence only compliments to the overall feel of the game.
In conclusion if you are getting tired of your typical first person shooters with all the mayhem and explosions then Mirrors Edge is the game for you. With breathtaking visuals and user friendly gaming system Mirrors Edge will easily grant your hours upon hours of entertaining gameplay.
