Resistance 2 vs Far Cry 2

Resistance 2 vs Far Cry 2 - Which game will get your cash?

With the arrival of many great titles this year, it becomes hard to decide which game you should spend your money on. If you are a fan of first person shooters, then Resistance 2 and Far Cry 2 will probably be on your agenda in the near future. Boasting a revolutionary player experience, both games do have their own advantages and setbacks, but which game will earn your hard earned dollars? Lets take a peek below and analyze both.

Story

Being one of the first exclusive titles for the playstation 3, Resistance: Fall of Man took the world by storm. It’s massive well designed maps redefined the meaning of multiplayer for the playstaton console. Due to it’s unimagined success Insomniac games began working on a sequel to the game. Without giving to much away Resistance 2 is centered around the original concept of the Chimera invasion, except now it has reached the USA. The game has notably addressed many questions that were left unanswered in the original, although it does leave just as many new questions for the player to ponder about. However, the story issues (which are arguably a minor or subjective problem) are overshadowed by the considerable elements that are marshaled together for Resistance 2. The first game was well known for its atmosphere, tight corridors and its surreal environments. All of that has been maintained, and even augmented.

Multiplayer

For those who thought the original was jam packed with online fun, you are all overdue for a wake up call. R2 incorporates all the prominant mutliplayer features of the original(large maps, massive action) and adds to them. Significantly the 60 player online support, which allows users to wage all out wars against each other in deathmatch and a plethora of other modes. Another thing to note is that R2 boasts the arrival of online and offline co-op modes, something never before seen in the Resistance series.

As a result of the increase in support for online players, the maps in my opinion are much bigger but only open up as you progress through the co-op mode. If you know what I mean. Overall the multiplayer is quite exciting and filled with a bunch of death and mayhem.

If you are a fan of huge battles Resistance 2 does it best, although the original packed quite a punch, there is no comparison between R2. ‘The gunfights that erupt across the various levels will give you an adrenaline rush. While the scale of the battles in the first game was large, the numbers present on screen at one point in time is simply incredible. You’ll find yourself and a dozen or more soldiers squaring off against twenty or more drones, a number of Chimera, and a couple of turrets, all firing bullets at you. Facing down these incoming attacks can be daunting, but when you throw in the fact that the frame rate is rock solid without a hiccup, it’s a pretty impressive feat that brings you into the action of the firefight.’

Overall

In conclusion although it has some minor setbacks in it’s storyline, Resistance 2 is a must have for any shooter fan and gun junkie. To end on a negative note, I preferred the weapons in the original to those in R2, however R2 did possess a few guns I took a liking too, specifically the ‘marksmen’.

Far Cry 2

Story

Sandbox is just a word but Far Cry 2 gives it a meaning. Built on the ever popular Crytek engine which housed the framework of Crysis and Far Cry, FC2 strives to provide the player with the most realistic and responsive environment possible. The game revolves between two warring factions, called the APR and UFLL, in an unnamed African nation. The player is given main and side quests to complete which reward one with upgrades and progression in the game. One has the ability to make minor and major choices throughout the game which don’t really add up until the end, however they do have a significant impact in the development of the plot. The story commences semi slowly but begins to pick up momentum as you make your way through all the objectives and missions.

In that sense the quest structure can get tedious, but the open-world design helps alleviate some of the fatigue of repetition that might start to set in by giving you free range to do whatever you want. Assuming you’ve got some of the more interesting weapons unlocked, you can approach from any angle and choose to engage the enemy with rockets, sniper fire, or peg one of the ubiquitous explosive barrels or propane tanks to start a fire, which isn’t as useless a move as it might seem to be.

Graphics & Sound

In my opinion the graphics are simply divine, the colors are vivid and the scenery is majestic. Things such as explosions and large color sequences radiate through your screen in a wave of jewel like pixels. The audio compliments the imagery in the sense that all the sounds that you will come across contain terrific weapon effects and ambient sounds, a strong musical score and interesting enemy chatter during combat.

Overall

In conclusion, with a huge development staff behind it Far Cry 2 lives up to all it’s expectations. If not for the slightly lacking story line and par AI the game would be scoring a perfect ten. If you are looking for ‘the most realistic’ game up to to date then I would highly suggest you invest in Far Cry 2.

The Verdict

If it was me I would purchase both games as they have enough playing time and fun in between them to last you a few months. However, the games are not really similar in genre so it depends on what type of game you would prefer. If you are in the mood for a large scale shooter with fast paced action then I would go with Resistance 2, on the other hand if you are in the mood for a bigger, open world based game which is almost life like in it’s representation then I would go with Far Cry 2. Personally, at this point in time I would go for Far Cry 2, however R2’s multiplayer is unmatched.

Great review man! We should blog collaborate one day dude :).

Haha yeah, definitely. :)

I’ve been getting tired of game creators trying to come up with new ways for war type games to have appeal, but every time I begin to think my interest has dwindled, a premise like Far Cry 2 keeps my fire burning.

I Hyped Far Cry 2 on Everhype and gave it 78% which I think is fairly accurate.

I wouldn’t mind getting some opinions on it . If you get on there, rate me a 5 & request friendship.
