5 Things you can do to speed up your pc

5 Things you can do to speed up your pc

If your like me and your computer grunts and puffs everytime you need to open an application, or decides to stick you with a blue screen just for fun. Here are a few things that can help you speed up your pc.

1.  Disk defragmentation

This is an obvious one and most of you would probably already know about this, but nevertheless I feel it is my duty to mention it.  Disk defragmentation is the process of reorganizing and rewriting files so that they occupy one large continuous area on your hard disk rather than several smaller areas. I recommend you defrag your drives once every two weeks, but its up to you. Performing a disk defrag is fairly simple. Click on start > accessories > system tools > disk defragmenter.

2. Check and remove your startup applications

Most people have a ton of programs installed on their computers and many of these programs are set to launch and run on startup. This is really annoying and not needed, plus it really really increases the booting up time of your pc. To change and alter which applications run on startup click on start > run > msconfig > ok > startup. Now just uncheck the applications that you don’t need for example, windows messenger, quicktime player, basically any application that you are not going to be using as soon as you turn on your computer. Watch out for the essential system startup objects though. Press apply and restart your computer.

3. Check and remove unnecessary services

Services are the things that make your computer run, they are the building blocks of your operating system. However, windows usually comes with a bunch of services that you probably won’t need, or are not going to be needing at this point in time. Disabling unwanted services from running will also drastically speed up your pc and decrease your boot time.  To do this go to your control panel > administrative tools > services. Now what you are going to want to do is read through all the automatic startup services and see if there is any that currently you don’t need, I recommend you leave the ones that you have no clue about. After you have done that, look through all the manual services and their descriptions to see if they concern, then just you can just disable them aswell. Right click > properties > (startup type) > disabled.

4. Increase your virtual disk

If you have plenty of hard drive space on your computer it’s a good idea to devote a few gigabytes to your virtual disk or ‘commit charge’ on the XP systems. Basically if you are using XP right click on your computer > properties > advanced > performance > settings > advanced > (virtual memory) > change > custom size and increase the initial and maximum size by a few gigs, so (xxxx). If you are vista it’s pretty much the same except when you click on properties just click on the advanced system settings tab on the left.

5. Use classic themes and adjust for best performance

The vista and XP themes sure look great and all but they do use quite a bit of memory. You can optimize your pc more by changing your XP or Vista theme to the windows classic theme and adjusting it for best performance. This is how you go about doing this.
Right click on desktop > properties > themes > windows classic > ok.
Then as mentioned earlier when you were changing your virtual disk, right click on your computer > properties > advanced > performance > visual effects > adjust for best performance.

And there you have it, 5 simple things you can do to speed up your pc. I will just leave you with one final thought, don’t clutter your computers with crap people. I have a friend come up to me and ask me, hey eric my computer is really slow, what can I do? Its not working.  This is stupid, you ask why your computer isnt responding yet you continue to download more and more warez and refuse to use an antivirus software.

Haha.
